Ashland Investment Services

Making Some Smart Invest-ments

I just talked with a friend in Grants Pass recently who’d invested some money in the stock market last year. I figured he’d taken a beating, but amazingly he said he’d doubled his money. Just goes to show you that if you semi know what you’re doing, anything is possible.

And at Ashland Investment Services, owners Larry Hayes and Carolyn Federico have almost sixty years of experience in the investment business, working for such firms as Smith Barney, PaineWebber, Dain Rauscher, Shearson, and Merrill Lynch.
Larry grew up in Seattle, while Carolyn is an Oregonian who moved to Ashland in 1975 to finish college at SOU. The couple met at a meeting in San Francisco in 1988, and four months later Larry moved to Ashland to be with her.

“I originally got interested in investments when I was a paperboy for the Seattle Times,” Larry said. “I started reading the business section and made a hobby of investing and making paper portfolios for years. I finally took a job at Foster & Marshall, a regional Seattle brokerage firm, in 1980.”

The firm was eventually bought out by Shearson Lehman, which in turn merged with Smith Barney. “For about ten years, every firm I moved to was bought out by somebody else,” Larry said. “And the same things were happening with firms Carolyn worked at. By the end of the 1990s, we both said enough. We opened our own firm, Ashland Investment Services. After about a decade of buyouts, mergers and unplanned moves, we wanted to control our own destinies.”

A.I.S. is an independent, local financial service firm offering stocks, bonds, CD’s, mutual funds, IRAs, annuities and insurance. “Clients can expect in-person service and accountability with no big Wall Street agenda,” Carolyn said. “We offer you honest, unbiased investment opinions.”

The firm also provides account reviews and personally-tailored investment plans. “We know times are tough,” Larry said. “But we feel that now, more than ever, is a good time to get professional advice about your investments.”

In addition to a mutual interest in finance, the couple are both musicians. Carolyn is an original and current member of Siskiyou Singers and is on the board of The Siskiyou Institute, “a nonprofit dedicated to presenting high quality music and education to residents of the Rogue Valley.

Larry is a bass player and guitarist who has played in many blues and rock bands. He’s also a member of Ashland Elks Lodge, #944.
