Find the Best of British and Local Specialty Items at the Jacksonville Country Store
When I hear the term “ex-pats” I usually think of Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound sipping apertifs in some smoke infested café in Paris. But that’s from my American-centric point of view. The Rogue Valley is actually filled with many ex-pats who have made southern Oregon their home.
Linda Medeiros is one of these folks. She moved to the Rogue Valley from Yorkshire, England 16 years ago. Over the past ten years Linda has made it her business to provide imported specialty goods—as well as a host of local products—to fellow ex-pats and locals alike.
“My followers usually find me at White’s Country Farm (located at 3939 W. Main Street),” Linda said. But in November 2009 Linda opened the Jacksonville Country Store at 220 E. California Street in downtown Jacksonville. “I thought that my British specialties would be a good fit for Jacksonville,” Linda said.
Linda’s shop offers British, Australian and South African imported specialties. “This includes British teas, biscuits (cookies), sweets (candies), pickles, sauces, and beverages,” Linda explained. “And top must-haves for ex-pats like Heinz beans, HP Sauce, Branston Pickle, PG Tips tea, Digestive biscuits, Crunchies and Flakes (candy). The Australian favorite is the Vegemite spread.”
In addition to the imported goods, the Jacksonville Country Store offers local artisan products. “Southern Oregon is rich with artisans from bakers to barbeque sauce makers,” Linda said. “I have handmade country furniture and crafts at reasonable prices, plus an array of one of a kind collectables, as well as locally made breads, cakes, jams, candies & crafts.”
“I will gladly fulfill customers requests and suggestions for inventory,” Linda said. “I have something for everyone.”
The Jacksonville Country Store is open Monday thru Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm. Call 541-702-2170 for more information.
